HOW TO USE METROPOLITAN AND SUBURBAN PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Travel Documents

Smart Tickets

On the bus/tram, you must show your smartcard to our authorized staff when they ask you to produce a valid ticket for inspection.

You must validate your smart ticket (or your under 26 Pass) every time you board a service before arriving at the next stop at the contactless reader placed on board. This device can also provide information about the validity status of a ticket being used (just touch your card on the reader after pressing the right button below the display).

At every metro station, access to platform is controlled with turnstiles, that can be opened with smartcards, chip-on-paper or magnetic-stripe tickets. A turnstile which allows you to pass through is identifiable by the green arrow sign being shown by its light direction indicator (otherwise, the red cross sign is shown).

Hold your smartcard against the validator until a beeping sound is emitted; the system recognizes the card and opens the turnstile. Entrance is confirmed by an acoustic and light (green) signal. Smartcard must be handled with care, kept safe and must not to be exposed to heat or magnetic fields.

Tap&Go (GTT Contactless Payment System)

The new GTT contactless payment system allows passengers to purchase a bus ticket in metro stations and, on board, on the 6, 8, 11, 12, 17/, 19, 19N, 33, 35, 38, 44, 55, 56, 58, 58/, 61, 63/, 64, 68, 71, 74, 84, CP1, OB1, SE1, SE2 and SM2 bus routes. Payment cards will open turnstiles and validate tickets on board. The System accepts all contactless cards issued on the Visa, Mastercard and American Express networks: Mastercard/Maestro, Visa/VPay and Amex credit, prepaid and debit cards. Contactless payments are also available for cards linked to a digital wallet on your smartphone or smartwatch.

Purchasing a ticket with credit card is simple and intuitive: the card must be held on the validator until a beeping sound is emitted, as happens for bip cards and chip on paper tickets. The system recognizes the card as an ordinary ticket and, in metro stations, opens turnstiles. In every metro station, and in both directions, a turnstile is reserved for contactless payments: it is equipped with a specific reader, which is easily identifiable by the card network logos and by the signages located on the floor and on the glass barriers of the turnstiles.

Actually, a ticket purchased with a payment card at metro stations or on board the vehicles fitted with the specific reader, is equivalent to an ordinary “City 100” ticket: the fare is €1,70, it is valid for 100 minutes on the whole urban network, and within the validity period passengers are allowed to board connecting services. The fare is directly charged to the account the payment card is linked to. At the moment, it is possible to purchase one ticket at a time.

The fare is directly charged to the account the payment card is linked to; it is possible to check the details of the journey made on gtt.easyticketing.it/cards.

Besides credit cards, the system also accepts debit cards issued on the Maestro network: in this case,as happens for other purchases (e.g. self-service fuel), the system has set a pre-authorisation of €7 per journey; once the pre-authorization is done, the customer will be charged only the price of the “City 100”ordinary ticket.

Ticket inspectors check tickets respecting the privacy: passengers are required to provide only the last 4 digits of the number of the card used, in order to make the inspectors verify the payment with the device the staff is equipped with.

Magnetic Stripe Tickets (U,A,B Integrated Tickets)

Integrated tickets are paper-based tickets to which a magnetic stripe and an anti-counterfiting holographic band are applied. Each of these ticket types is identifiable by a code corresponding to a certain fare.

Tickets must be validated when you board a bus/tram, enter the metro or before boarding a train (readers are located at GTT and RFI railway stations) within the validity period.
At every metro station, access to platform is controlled with turnstiles. Those which allow you to pass through are identifiable by the green arrow sign being shown by its light direction indicator (otherwise, the red cross sign is shown).

To access the metro, validate your ticket by inserting it into the front slot (photo 1). The machine will immediately shoot it back up through the top slot (photo 2). Then pick up your validated ticket and go.

Magnetic stripe tickets must be intact and must not present any abrasion or erasure; they must be kept safe, not be band/fold and must not be exposed to heat or magnetic fields.

Use of vehicles

Passengers must board and alight from the vehicles only at the stops using the appropriate entrance and exit doors. Passengers must not get on or off when the vehicle is moving. Passengers must leave the doorways, gangways and areas in front of the punching machines free at all times and observe the regulations displayed in the vehicles.

Passengers are allowed to speak to the driver only to request service information or in case of difficulty (for instance, sudden illness, mugging, harassment or malfunctioning).

Transporting luggage

All 80x50x50 cm pieces of luggage can be transported free of charge; each passenger may take a maximum of two pieces of luggage but must ensure these do not obstruct the passageway.

Lost and found

The driver and GTT personnel are not allowed to return objects found on the vehicles directly. Lost articles found on GTT vehicles are taken to the Lost and Found of the City of Turin, where they can be collected after 48 hours from the time of loss.

The lost and found office in via Meucci 4. Open on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, from 9.00 a.m. to 12 noon. Closed on only Sundays and public holidays.

Infringements and sanctions

Infringements to regulations are subject to the payment of a fine. Fines may be applied independent of criminal sanctions (applicable when the offence constitutes a crime) in addition to compensation for any damages suffered by GTT.

The Sassi - Superga Rack-Railway

The old Sassi - Superga rack tramway

The historical Sassi – Superga Rack-Railway is the only one of its kind in Italy. It is the present-day continuation of a centennial  tradition that started back in 1884 with the Agudio cable railway. At the outset, the train was powered by an engine operating a steel cable, which ran parallel to the tracks. In 1934 the line was converted in a rack tramway with traction provided by a central rack-railway. The tram has recently been refurbished and visitors can enjoy trips reminding the olden days.
The track is 3.100m long from Sassi to Superga climbing from 225 to 650 above sea level with an average slope of 13,5%.
From Superga, visitors will enjoy a breathtaking view of Torino and the Alps. The Basilica (designed by the Italian architect Filippo Juvarra) and the tombs of the Savoy royal family are located on the top of the hill.

There are  ticket office, the tramway museum and coffee bar, restaurant and a pizzeria at Sassi station at the foot  of the hill, while the Superga station at the top of the hill houses the Local Hill Park Agency centre, which promotes various events of raising public environment awareness.

The rack-railway is drawn by a locomotive carriage with a maximum tow of two wagons and capacity of 210 passengers.

The service is accessible to disabled visitors upon phone reservation at GTT Tourist Offices.  Each  disabled visitor must be accompanied by 2 assistants.

Groups of at least 10 upon reservation.

Line 7 - Historic Tram

linea 7 capolinea

The historic tram “Line 7” project – under the supervision of ATTS (Association of Historical Trams in Turin) – was sponsored by the Municipality of Turin, and included as part of interventions to promote low environmetal impact  public transport.

With funding from the Ministry for the Environment and in collaboration with GTT (Local Public Transport Group), the city of Turin managed to renovate a number of historic wagons in 2007. All the trams are dated between ’30s and ‘50s and have been  technically, electrically and mechanically completely renovated to provide the same security and safety level of the most modern means of public transport.

An integrated, mobile museum

The historic tram “Line 7” which was projected as a “Mobile Museum” has been fitted into the urban transport network with concentric clockwise/anticlockwise routes embracing the city center. The itinerary starts from Piazza Castello, passing close to Porta Nuova Train Station and offers a new opportunity to move around the city centre both, to tourists and residents.

This initiative (first of its kind in Italy) is based on similar experiences already implemented successfully abroad, such as “Market Street Railways” in San Francisco, and the historic lines in Porto, Rotterdam, New Orleans, Santos and Lisbon.

Fares

Being part of the local public transport, passes and tickets valid for local public transport are valid for “Line 7” Historic Tram.

Timetable

FREE PUBLIC TRANSPORT SERVICE TO REACH COVID-19 VACCINATION SITES

ilpiemontetivaccina logoGTT joins the Piedmont Region-led initiative that allows those who have received a booking confirmation by SMS to reach the vaccination site by bus, tram or train without purchasing a ticket.

In case of ticket inspection, the passengers will just be asked to show the booking confirmation text.

Those having travelled by metro will be reimbursed by GTT: the tickets for the outward and the return journeys will be refunded within up to 3 months of the date of vaccination.
To get the refund, the passenger must apply for it in person, after having made an appointment, at the Customer Service Center at Porta Nuova (it is possible to book the appointment through Ufirst app or website): at the counter they will be required to show the tickets along with the vaccination booking confirmation SMS.

Tap&go (gtt contactless system) - WITH YOUR CREDIT CARD YOU WILL ALWAYS HAVE A GTT TICKET IN YOUR POCKET

tapgo adesivo porta anteriore

The new contactless payment system allows passengers to pay their fare at metro gates and on board blue-yellow buses.

As an alternative to buying paper tickets, you can pay your fare as you ride just by tapping your contactless bank card: at the specially-equipped turnstiles at every metro station and on board those buses and trams – including the new vehicles with the yellow-and-blue livery – which display the specific yellow sign on the front door (see the image).

In every metro station, and in both directions, a turnstile is reserved for contactless payments: it is equipped with a specific reader, which is easily identifiable by the card network logo and by the sign stuck on the floor and on the glass barriers of the turnstiles

Actually, a ticket being purchased with a payment card at metro stations or on board the vehicles fitted with the specific reader, is equivalent to an ordinary “City 100” ticket: the fare is €1,90, it is valid for 100 minutes on the whole urban network, and within the validity period passengers are allowed to board connecting services. The fare is directly charged to the account the payment card is linked to. At the moment, it is possible to purchase one ticket at a time.

The fare is directly charged to the account the payment card is linked to; it is possible to check the details of the journey made on gtt.easyticketing.it/cards.

Besides credit cards, the system also accepts debit cards issued on the Maestro network: in this case,as happens for other purchases (e.g. self-service fuel the system has set a [temporary] pre-authorisation hold of 7,00 € per journey. Once the pre-authorization period has expired, the customer will be charged only the price of the “City 100”ordinary ticket.

Ticket inspectors check tickets respecting the privacy: passengers are required to provide only the last 4 digits of the number of the card they have used, in order to make the inspectors verify the payment with the device the staff is equipped with.
